The political opposition in Venezuela has been in touch with “governments across the world” following President Nicolas Maduro’s arrest.

Those countries include countries in the region such as Argentina, Ecuador, Panama and Paraguay and also France all of whom the opposition says expressed their support for “restoring the will of the people” in Venezuela.

Trump said at a press conference that he does not believe opposition leader María Corina Machado has the necessary support to govern the country.

“I think it would be very difficult for her to be the leader. She does not have the support or the respect within the country. She is a very pleasant woman, but she does not have the respect needed to be a leader,” Trump said of the latest Nobel Peace Prize winner.

The opposition maintains former presidential candidate Edmundo González won the July 2024 presidential election with 67% of the vote, compared with Maduro’s 30%.

However, Venezuela’s National Electoral Council declared Maduro the winner without releasing details of the vote count, a decision that was rejected by much of the international community.

CNNE’s Gonzalo Zegarra contributed to this report.
